Jewellery and trinkets are the best friends of women all around the globe. So it is a basic requirement to care for the jewellery pieces in order to keep them in the perfect condition always. Extra care is required especially in the event of precious and semi precious jewellery as they are expensive and we often have sentiments attached to it. These pieces of jewellery are often used by us for daily wear and the continuous usage causes the stones and the metals to lose their lustre. This lack of glow in turn causes the jewellery pieces to look dirty and dingy. Often precious jewellery pieces are our ancestral heirlooms and hence we do not want the heirlooms to be damaged by the inexperienced ways of cleaning. Do it yourself is the best way available to take care of your jewellery pieces on a daily basis at your home. Though commercial jewellery cleaners are just as effective still it is recommended to use natural elements in order to clean the jewellery pieces.
Here are a few ways in which you can clean different precious metals at your home-
- Gold- Use lukewarm water and put a little detergent in it. Then use a soft brush, preferably an old toothbrush to gently clean your gold ornaments. Use can also try submerging your gold ornaments in the warm soapy water for some minutes and then let it air dry if your ornament is not tarnished. If it is tarnished then try adding a few drops of ammonia to the whole mixture.
- Silver- Silver can get scratched very easily and hence it is advised not to brush it rigorously. Just clean it with a soft cloth or a sponge or try soaking the metal in warm soap water.
- Textured metal jewellery- Just buy a brush from a hardware store and brush the jewellery properly in order to get rid of the dirt inside the texture.
- Platinum- Use warm water and a cloth or a toothbrush in order to clean your platinum jewellery on a regular basis.
Few ways to clean your precious stones-
- Diamonds- Soak the diamond studded jewellery in a tub of warm soap water and later pat it dry with the help of a cloth. If it is too dirty, try brushing it with a toothbrush. You can also use toothpaste to clean your diamond.
- Turquoise- Do not soak the stone in water for a long time as it may damage the stone or even cause discolouration. After washing it in soap water, pat dry the stone immediately with a cloth.
- Pearls- Though it is not a stone in the strict sense of word, you can clean pearls by washing it or even soaking it in lukewarm water and drying it with a soft cotton cloth. You can also use wool wash detergents to clean pearls. However, remember to clean pearls with a cloth after usage so as to maintain their healthy glow.
There are some things that should be done if you want your jewellery pieces to be in a fine condition always. Wear them regularly in order to maintain their glow and lustre. Clean them on an occasional basis especially when you sweat a lot after wearing the pieces. Keep them in a separate cotton bag away from the touch of other metals if you want to maintain their glow.
