Engagement Ring – This denotes the beginning. This is given generally at the time of proposal or as a symbol of finalization of marriage. When a couple decides to spend their life together, they get engaged with each other by exchanging rings. But they are not yet married. Earlier only women received engagement rings but now both exchange the ring. It is worn on the index finger that is the third one, next to the pinky. This ring indicates that they are taken and committed. There are different designs and varieties of engagement rings available but the traditionally common one has a single diamond or gem on a metallic band, commonly made of gold or platinum.

Wedding Ring – While engagement ring was a symbol of being taken, wedding ring is the sign of togetherness. It depicts that the couple is now together forever, finally. Wedding rings are exchanged during the wedding ceremony and are meant to wear throughout ones life, as long as the couple is together. This ring is slightly different from the engagement ring; it just has a metallic band without any stone or diamond on it. It is worn on the same finger on which the engagement ring was.

Both these rings are related to ones love life, but they are different. The engagement ring was traditionally given by men to their lady as a proposal for marriage and as in asking the girl’s hand from her father. But the reason behind the wedding ring is different. The wedding ring depicts forever love. The reason why it is a round band because that circle symbolizes infinity and the hole is a doorway to the future togetherness. So this is the reason why they are different. These can’t be used interchangeably. Generally, women wear both the rings but some women remove their engagement rings once they are married.

Both the rings come in various collections but they have a peculiar design and that is different from each other. The engagement ring is more extravagant whereas the wedding ring is simpler, just with a band. Wedding rings are plain looking. Earlier, engagement rings reflected the man’s financial status and it was kind of a financial commitment to the girl as well. So engagement rings were royal and had stones or diamonds on them.
